Figure 30: This is a mirror image of a cross-section of the lingual side of the posterior mandible.  It shows a large central hollow space or cavitation with numerous microcavitations (C) within the surrounding walls.  The red circle represents the space traversed by the neurovascular bundle during life; it was surrounded by "air" at autopsy.
