Figure 28: This autopsy case shows multiple dark, mushy areas of osteonecrosis in the mandible.  Notice the hollow space or cavitation running along the inferior cortex and just above it.  There is a gray/tan oval of gelatinous marrow just under the nerve in the bicuspid region. The anterior (left) margin shows an area of poor healing from past curettage (NICO surgery).  The worst area of involvement is in the second/third molar region (top and toward the right); this area was not visible on radiographs.  The patient had been treated for trigeminal neuralgia of the second branch and atypical facial neuralgia/pain of the third branch.
