Figure 25 (above): A hollow space or cavitation is seen beneath the cortex (here removed) in the first bicuspid area of the right mandible.  No tissue has been removed from the lesion; only a cortical window was created.

Figure 26 (below): A very large hollow space in this patient's marrow extends from the mandibular second molar area deeply into the ramus.  Blood oozing from the cavity walls is darker than normal.
