A Hollow Jaw

This is a cross section (mirrored
image) from the posterior mandible in a chronic
pain patient. The entire central core of the marrow is missing, having long been
destroyed, leaving the mandibular nerve (purple circle) to "hang" freely in the
air
space (cavitation). Small or "microcavitations" (with "C" in center) are
scattered
around the edge of the larger cavitation. The overlying covering consists of
dense
fibrous scar tissue.
"Cavitation" is NOT the disease, it is the RESULT of the disease!
